GLOSSARY TERM

Sweetness

Tasting

The perception of sugar or sweet taste in wine.

What it means in wine

Sweetness may come from residual sugar, grape concentration, or fortified/sweet wine production methods. Fruitiness can make a dry wine seem sweet even when little sugar remains.

Why it matters

Sweetness should be separated from fruitiness so readers do not confuse ripe aroma with actual residual sugar.
