Yakima Valley is Washington's oldest federally established AVA, designated in 1983 under 27 CFR Part 9. It occupies the lower Yakima River basin in south-central Washington, with a desert climate moderated by irrigation from the river and its canal systems. The appellation generates substantial COLA label activity across Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Riesling, and Chardonnay, and is home to the majority of Washington's wine grape acreage.
