Santa Cruz Mountains is a California AVA established in 1981 under 27 CFR Part 9, defined by elevations above the marine fog line along the coastal mountain range south of San Francisco Bay. The appellation encompasses both the western coastal and eastern bay-side slopes and requires that wines derive from vineyards above approximately 400 meters elevation. Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir account for most COLA filings.
