Santo Spirito
Santo Spirito is a label-visible Etna contrada and a good example of the region's small-place vocabulary. Reds usually center on Nerello Mascalese, with red fruit, flowers, spice, smoke, and fine tannin, while whites may use Carricante for citrus and mineral drive. The term helps drinkers understand that Etna is not a single uniform volcanic style.
Notable Rules
Contrada labeling narrows the geographic origin within Etna DOC and does not create a separate grape or aging classification.
Recent Vintages
Recent Sicily and Etna vintages have been marked by heat, drought pressure, and strong local variation from altitude, volcanic soils, and exposure. Assovini Sicilia described 2023 as lower in quantity but high performing qualitatively after producers managed a complex climate; on Etna specifically, late ripening and large day-night shifts can preserve freshness even in warm years. Treat this as a regional climate-context note rather than a claim that every contrada performed the same way.
